The three large, muscled men looked positively ridiculous in the flowing priestess robes we had hastily lent them, the fabric draping awkwardly over their broad shoulders and muscular frames. Their wide chests and thick arms strained against the fabric, creating an amusingly ludicrous spectacle.

At least they were now covered and decent, even if they looked absurd.

“I think they look hot,” Ayla said. “Very gender-bending.”

“You’re kidding me. It’s not exactly the most dignified outfit,” I said with a chuckle, “but it’ll have to do. Now,” I said, clapping my hands and attempting to take a more serious tone, “let’s get to the bottom of this. What exactly happened? I thought werewolves don’t shift until puberty?”

Hunter’s tail swept back and forth like a metronome as he bounded toward me, his bark joyful and loud. His tongue hung from his mouth, and his eyes shone with excitement.

“Before we get into this, what can he understand?” Emma asked. “I don’t want to talk about this in front of him if he should be shielded from this. A two-month-old baby doesn’t understand things, but that puppy made it across Forkbridge, so I’m not taking anything at face value here.”

Eddie sat stoically to the right side of Lothian, his muscular frame clad in a deep crimson priestess robe that draped awkwardly over his broad shoulders. He was clearly in pain, both from the trauma of Hunter’s disappearance and the weight of his responsibilities as a werewolf and a father.

“In wolf form, he appears to understand slightly more than he would understand in human form, but Astra is right—infants don’t shift. I’ve never heard of a werewolf shifting before they could walk,” Lothian told Emma. “Hunter seems to be some kind of werewolf prodigy.”

Emma’s shoulders sagged, and a groan escaped her lips. Her eyes rolled to the ceiling, and she muttered, “Oh, great. Just what I needed.” Emma threw her hands up in the air and sighed. “What do you all know about one another when you’re wolves? Can you talk to Hunter? Can he talk to you?”

I was speechless—how did Emma not know this already?

After living with a pack of werewolves and spending time with Eddie, it was almost unbelievable she didn’t have this knowledge already. Had she been avoiding confronting the truth?

In the face of my shock and confusion, I could only remain silent.

It wasn’t the time.

“We can sense each other’s emotions,” Wyatt explained. “And we can communicate with one another telepathically while in wolf form. We can also find each other, sense each other’s presence.”

“That’s how Hunter was able to come to find you,” Lothian explained. “Even though you’re not a wolf, he has that tie to you because you birthed him. He can sense your emotions, he can sense your presence, and he can find you.”

Wyatt nodded. “Hunter missed you, and so he came to find you.”

As Lothian and Wyatt explained, Eddie and Lawrence (the werewolf Eddie had brought with him) listened intently but added nothing, their expressions giving nothing away. They sat there, still and silent, as their werewolf brothers tried to make sense of the situation for Emma.
